Why We Built an AI-Led Squarespace Comparison Site
TLDR
Squarewebsites makes products for Squarespace, so readers would be right to question whether we can fairly compare Squarespace with Wix, Webflow, WordPress, Shopify, Astro, and other alternatives.
That is why we built compare.squarewebsites.org as an AI-led research experiment rather than a conventional opinion post. We created a repeatable research protocol, gave it to an independent model, required source citations, and published the methodology alongside the results.
The goal is not to prove that Squarespace is always best. It is to help buyers see where each platform is strong, where it is limited, and which tradeoffs matter for their situation.
The Obvious Question:
Why would a Squarespace provider compare competitors?
Squarewebsites builds plugins and workflow tools for Squarespace designers. Universal Filter, Lazy Summaries, Custom Table Block, Advanced Map Block, and our Chrome extension all exist because Squarespace is useful but not complete.
That creates an obvious conflict. We benefit when people build on Squarespace, and we know the platform better than many of its alternatives.
We could have published another article explaining why Squarespace is the right choice. That would have been easy, but it would not have been especially useful.
People are reconsidering their website platforms for real reasons:
Pricing changes
Ecommerce limits
Design and editor preferences
Performance requirements
Content portability
Developer control
AI and answer-engine readiness
Some buyers should choose Squarespace. Others should choose Shopify, Webflow, WordPress, Astro, or another platform. A useful comparison must be allowed to reach that conclusion.
How we structured the experiment
We separated the work into distinct roles so one model was not responsible for inventing the methodology, conducting the research, judging the platforms, and presenting the results.
1.) GPT-5.5 structured the research protocol and operator contract
The implementation phase began in a separate Perplexity Computer thread running GPT-5.5. GPT-5.5 acted as architect and QA owner.
It converted the product requirements into a locked Kimi 3 operator contract with explicit inputs, stop conditions, artifact names, no-push and no-deploy boundaries, and a return packet that could be independently validated.
Its job was to define:
Which platforms must be included
Which buyer personas matter
Which features should be compared
Which source types are acceptable
How to handle missing or conflicting data
Which tables and visualizations buyers need
How recommendations should be scored
Which structured data should be included for AI agents
The brief required at least 15 Squarespace alternatives, including managed builders, ecommerce platforms, content-management systems, and developer frameworks such as Astro.
We will preserve the original research prompt and operator contract with the published methodology so readers can see how the experiment was framed.
2.) Kimi 3 conducted the research and implementation
We then gave the locked operator contract and seed research to external Kimi 3.
Kimi 3 performed the heavy lifting: it independently verified the research, wrote the first buyer’s guide, created the comparison structure, developed the visual direction, and produced the frontend implementation.

The model was instructed to cite claims, prefer primary sources, disclose unavailable data, and flag estimates rather than presenting them as facts.
3.) GPT-5.5 and humans verify; we do not quietly rewrite the winner
AI output is not automatically correct or unbiased.
After Kimi returns its files and reports, GPT-5.5 resumes the architect and QA role. Our verification process is to:
Check citations
Verify current pricing and product features
Fix broken layouts or code
Remove unsupported claims
Correct factual errors
Make the methodology understandable
Document material changes
Our role is not to quietly alter rankings because we dislike the outcome.
If a factual correction changes a score or recommendation, we will record the change and explain why.
Is the comparison editorial?
It is more accurate to call the project AI-led and methodology-driven, not “non-editorial.”
Every comparison contains judgment. Someone chooses the platforms, categories, scoring weights, and sources. AI models also have biases from their training data, search results, prompts, and reasoning patterns.
What we can do is make those choices visible.
The comparison is:
Not a paid placement
Not manually ranked to make Squarespace win
Not based only on Squarewebsites opinions
Built from a published research brief
Supported by linked sources
Open to correction
Designed to be repeatable by other models
That does not make it perfectly objective. It makes the process inspectable.
The Next Phase:
Run the same test with other models
Kimi 3 is the first research and implementation model, not the final authority.
We plan to give the same core methodology to other leading AI models and compare their results.
To keep the experiment comparable, GPT-5.5 will remain the architect and QA owner throughout every run. The research requirements, scoring framework, artifact contract, acceptance gates, and final review process will stay fixed.
Only the external research and implementation model will change.
That matters because switching both the architect and the execution model would make disagreements difficult to interpret. By holding GPT-5.5 and the operator contract constant, we can more clearly see which differences come from Kimi 3 or another model.
We want to know:
Do different models recommend different platforms?
Which facts do they emphasize?
How sensitive are rankings to scoring weights?
Do they disagree more on designers, ecommerce, or developers?
Which claims repeatedly survive independent research?
Where does source selection change the conclusion?
If another model reaches a different verdict, we will not hide it. The disagreement is part of the experiment.

Updated results when pricing or features change
The aim is not to crown one AI model as the winner. It is to make platform advice more transparent.
